Migrants blamed for cutting Dak Nong forests

This has led to disputes and given local authorities many problems, said deputy director of the provincial Nationalities Committee K’Bot.

However, local authorities have taken responsibility for the newcomers and have initiated policies to help them get established.

According to reports, there are about 10,000 irregular households containing an estimated 50,000 people from other provinces in the area. This amounts to more than 10% of the province’s total population.

One of the newcomers, Vuong Thi Quoc, who lives in Tuy Duc District’s Dak Ngo Commune, said she had settled in the area in 1999 after moving from her home village in Ha Quang District in the northern province of Cao Bang.

"But we Mong ethnic minority people are very crowded even here," said Quoc.

She said the (new) land was very fertile and each family had cleared several ha of land to plant cassava.

"If officials discover us, we move to new areas. We earn tens of millions of dong for each ha of cassava."

"We are far from hungry. Many families have bought motorbikes and built houses," said Quoc.

Director of Quang Tin Forestry Company Than Van Minh said nearly 1,000 migrant households were established in forest areas assigned to the company.
